Concrete Block Fill Calculator
Estimate grout or concrete needed to fill masonry block cores, with waste and premix bags.
About concrete block core fill
Concrete block fill examples
| Blocks and core volume | Fill required | Bag estimate |
|---|---|---|
| 100 blocks; 0.22 cu ft each; 10% waste | 24.20 cu ft or 0.90 cu yd | Requires 41 bags when each bag yields 0.60 cubic foot. |
| 50 blocks; 0.18 cu ft each; 5% waste | 9.45 cu ft or 0.35 cu yd | Requires 16 bags at 0.60 cubic foot per bag. |
| 200 blocks; 0.25 cu ft each; 10% waste | 55.00 cu ft or 2.04 cu yd | A ready-mix delivery may be more practical at this volume. |
How to estimate block fill
- Count the blocks or individual cells that the project requires to be filled.
- Find the fillable core volume per block in the manufacturer's product data.
- Enter a waste allowance and the packaged product's stated yield per bag.
- Calculate volume and bags, then round the purchase quantity for site and delivery conditions.
Concrete block fill FAQ
How much concrete fills one block?
The volume depends on block width, shell thickness, webs, and manufacturer. Consult the unit's technical sheet and enter its published core-fill volume for a reliable estimate.
Are all concrete block cells filled?
No, many walls are only partially grouted at reinforced cells and structural details. Follow the approved plans and count only the cells designated for fill.
Can I use ordinary concrete instead of masonry grout?
Use the material specified by the designer and masonry code. Masonry grout has flow and aggregate characteristics intended to fill narrow cores without bridging.
Why should I add waste?
Some material remains in equipment, spills, or fills irregular spaces beyond the nominal core volume. A measured allowance reduces the risk of stopping a grout lift before completion.
How many premix bags should I buy?
Divide the total cubic feet including waste by the yield printed on the bag, then round upward. Yield changes with product size and water content, so verify the current package data.
