How to estimate concrete blocks
- Measure the finished length and height of the wall in feet.

How many standard blocks cover one square foot?
A nominal 8-inch by 16-inch block face covers about 0.889 square feet. That works out to approximately 1.125 standard blocks per square foot before waste.
Should I use actual or nominal block dimensions?
Use nominal dimensions when conventional mortar joints complete the stated module. Use the manufacturer's planning dimensions when working with thin joints or specialty masonry systems.
How much waste should I add?
Five percent is a useful starting point for simple walls with few cuts. Increase the allowance for complex bonds, many corners, fragile finishes, or uncertain field dimensions.
Does the estimate include mortar or grout?
No, the result counts concrete masonry units only. Mortar, grout, reinforcement, lintels, caps, and footing materials require separate estimates.
How do I account for doors and windows?
Subtract the area of substantial openings before dividing by block face area. Keep some allowance because cut pieces and bond patterns may prevent complete reuse of blocks around each opening.
