About electrical box fill

Electrical box fill rules limit how many conductors, devices, fittings, and grounding components may occupy an outlet, junction, or device box. Adequate free space protects insulation from damage, reduces crowding, and makes safe splicing and device installation possible. This calculator compares a rectangular box’s geometric inside volume with a simplified conductor-volume total based on common National Electrical Code allowances. Each insulated conductor that originates outside the box and is spliced or terminated inside generally counts once at the allowance for its gauge. Each device yoke is represented here as two conductor allowances at the largest selected conductor size. All equipment grounding conductors together are represented as one allowance in this simplified model. The allowance values used are 2.00 cubic inches for 14 AWG, 2.25 for 12 AWG, 2.50 for 10 AWG, 3.00 for 8 AWG, and 5.00 for 6 AWG. Available volume is calculated by multiplying the entered clear inside length, width, and depth. This geometric approach is useful for custom or conceptual boxes, but listed manufactured boxes normally have an official volume marked by the manufacturer. That marked capacity should be used instead of dimensions for compliance work because wall shape, knockouts, raised covers, internal clamps, and construction details can change usable volume. Actual code counting can be more detailed than this tool. Conductors passing through without splice may count differently from pigtails that remain entirely within the box. Internal cable clamps, support fittings, barriers, luminaire studs, and mixed conductor sizes require specific allowances. Grounding conductor rules can also depend on quantity and size under the adopted code edition. The largest selected conductor size is applied uniformly here, which is conservative for some mixed-gauge arrangements but not a substitute for an itemized calculation. Treat the result as a preliminary screening aid. Confirm every conductor and fitting category, use the box’s listed volume, and consult the locally adopted electrical code before installation. Electrical work should be performed or reviewed by a qualified person, with power isolated and proper equipment used. Should I use measured or marked box volume?

Use the manufacturer’s marked volume for a listed box whenever it is available. Geometric dimensions are mainly useful for preliminary checks and custom enclosures.

Why does one device count as two allowances?

A device yoke generally receives a double volume allowance based on the largest conductor connected to it. This accounts for the space occupied by the device and its terminals.

Do all grounding wires count separately?

This simplified calculation groups equipment grounding conductors into one allowance. Exact treatment can depend on conductor sizes, quantity, and the adopted code edition.

What about internal cable clamps?

Internal clamps can require an additional allowance and are not included here. Add every fitting required by the applicable code before making a compliance decision.

Can I mix conductor sizes?
