About siding material calculations

A siding calculator converts exterior wall measurements into net cladding area, waste-adjusted order area, and siding squares. Gross area is total wall length multiplied by average height. The area of major doors and windows is subtracted, then the selected waste percentage is added. One siding square represents 100 square feet of coverage, a trade unit commonly used for cladding and roofing. An optional price per square foot gives a basic material estimate from the adjusted area. Vinyl, fiber cement, wood, and metal siding share the same area calculation, but practical ordering differs. Vinyl is packaged in cartons with stated square-foot coverage. Fiber cement is sold as planks or panels whose exposed dimensions determine yield. Wood may be priced by board, linear foot, or square foot and can require selection for defects. Metal panels are often ordered in custom lengths, so panel count and lap geometry matter in addition to area. Use the type selector to label the estimate, then confirm the chosen product's packaging and coverage. Measure every elevation and divide irregular surfaces into simple rectangles and triangles. A gable area is one-half of base multiplied by vertical height. Dormers, bump-outs, garage walls, and narrow returns should be measured separately. Combining walls by total length and a representative height is convenient only when it reproduces their true area. Keep a wall-by-wall sketch so dimensions, deductions, and accessory lengths can be checked before ordering. Large doors and windows are normally deducted, but subtracting every vent or small opening can produce false precision. Pieces cut around small openings still consume material and create offcuts. The waste allowance covers those cuts, corner details, overlaps, starter pieces, color matching, defects, and mistakes. Straight rectangular elevations may use roughly 5 to 10 percent, while many gables, corners, short runs, or diagonal cuts can justify 12 to 15 percent or more. The cost result includes siding material only. A complete budget can include house wrap, flashing, rainscreen battens, starter strips, inside and outside corners, channels, trim, soffit, fascia, fasteners, sealants, finish, delivery, tax, scaffolding, disposal, and labor. Accessory quantities depend on linear measurements and cannot be inferred reliably from wall area. Use this estimate to compare cladding options and check supplier takeoffs, then round up to full cartons, boards, or panels. Confirm exposed coverage rather than nominal dimensions, compatible accessories, fire and wind ratings, fastening schedules, expansion requirements, and local water-management codes. How do I measure triangular gables?

Multiply the gable base by its vertical height and divide by two. Add that triangular area to the rectangular wall area before entering an equivalent total.

Should all openings be subtracted?

Subtract major doors and windows when they materially reduce coverage. Small openings still produce cut pieces and may be better handled through the waste allowance.

Does siding type change the area formula?

The geometric wall area is the same for every material. Package coverage, exposed dimensions, laps, breakage, layout constraints, and recommended waste differ by product.

What costs are excluded?
