About angle cuts

An angle cut calculator converts the geometry of a finished joint into settings that can be transferred to a miter saw or compound saw. For a flat joint made from two equal pieces, each piece normally receives half of the included corner angle. A 90-degree corner therefore uses a 45-degree miter on each member. This tool calls that input the corner angle and reports the saw rotation as the miter angle. Compound cuts are needed when material is tilted relative to the saw table, as with crown molding, sloped trim, and some framing details. In that case, simply dividing the corner angle by two is not enough. The calculator combines half of the included corner angle with the material slope. It computes the miter setting from the arctangent of the slope cosine multiplied by the tangent of half the corner. It computes the bevel setting from the arcsine of the slope sine multiplied by the sine of half the corner. Angle terminology differs among trades and saw manufacturers. Some saw scales display zero when the blade is square to the fence, while drawings may describe the complementary angle from the workpiece edge. The corner angle here is the included angle between the finished pieces. Material slope is measured from the flat saw-table orientation: zero means the stock lies flat, and increasing values represent a steeper installed slope. The outputs are the usual miter rotation and bevel tilt from zero on a compound miter saw. Real installations are rarely perfect. Walls can be out of square, molding can spring differently, stock can twist, and saw scales can have small calibration errors. Measure the actual corner with a reliable angle finder rather than assuming it is exactly 90 degrees. Make test cuts from scrap of the same profile, place the pieces in their intended orientation, and adjust before cutting expensive finished material. This calculator assumes two matching pieces share the joint equally and that the geometry is consistent. Unequal pieces, nested cutting methods, asymmetric joints, complex roof intersections, and manufacturer-specific crown stops may require a different setup. Follow saw safety instructions, keep hands clear of the blade, clamp small work securely, and verify which side of the marked line must be retained before making the cut.
