Frequently asked questions
How is the number of stair risers calculated?
Divide total rise by the maximum allowed riser height and round up to a whole number. Divide total rise by that whole number to find the equal finished riser height.
Why is there usually one fewer tread than risers?
The upper finished floor commonly serves as the final walking surface of the flight. Therefore a flight with 13 vertical rises normally has 12 constructed treads.
What is total stair run?
Total run is the horizontal distance covered by the treads. This calculator multiplies tread count by the entered tread depth and excludes landings.
Does this calculator guarantee code compliance?
No, it provides geometric planning values only. Confirm risers, treads, headroom, width, handrails, landings, and other details with current local requirements.
Should I measure before or after installing flooring?
Plan from finished-floor elevations because finish thickness affects total rise. If finishes are not installed, include their specified thickness in the measurement.
