Inch measurements are converted to square feet by dividing square inches by 144, and square feet are converted to square yards by dividing by nine. Measure the actual surfaces that the carpet will follow. Place the tape at the back of a tread, run it across the tread edge and down the riser, and record the tread and riser portions separately. Measure stair width where the carpet will be installed. A full-width installation uses nearly the entire step, while a runner covers only a centered strip. Check several stairs because dimensions can vary, especially in older homes, and use the largest representative measurements when appropriate. The geometric result does not include every installation allowance.
