Board and batten examples
| Wall and layout | Material estimate | Planning note |
|---|---|---|
| 8 × 24 ft wall; 8 in boards; 12 in spacing; 10% waste | 16 boards and 15 battens | The estimated cost is $399.67 at $2.50 per board square foot and $1.25 per batten foot. |
| 10 × 20 ft wall; 6 in boards; 8 in spacing; 8% waste | 19 boards and 18 battens | The narrower contemporary layout requires more vertical pieces. |

- Enter actual board width, clear spacing, and batten width in inches.
- Add supplier prices in their displayed units and choose a waste allowance.
- Select Calculate Materials, then compare the counts and purchase quantities with available stock lengths.
Board and batten calculator FAQ
What does board spacing mean in this calculator?
It is the clear distance from the edge of one board to the start of the next board. It is added to board width to establish each repeating layout module.
Why is one extra board included?
The additional board closes the final edge after counting repeating board-and-space modules. Actual edge conditions may require ripping the first and last boards for a centered layout.
How much waste should I add?
Ten percent is a common starting allowance for simple rectangular walls. Increase it for many openings, angled cuts, strict color matching, damaged pieces, or short stock lengths.
Should window and door openings be deducted?
Small openings are often left in the gross area because their offcuts contribute to waste. Large openings can be calculated separately, but remember to add trim and flashing materials.
Does the estimate include installation accessories?
No. Fasteners, trim, corners, flashing, weather barrier, finish, taxes, labor, and delivery are outside the displayed material total.
