About the pipe volume calculator

Pipe volume is the amount of space contained inside a straight length of pipe. It matters when sizing storage and treatment systems, estimating how much water must be drained, calculating chemical dose, planning a flush, or determining the quantity of fluid trapped in a process line. The relevant diameter is the internal diameter because wall thickness occupies space and does not contribute to fluid capacity. A nominal six-inch pipe can have a noticeably different inside diameter depending on its schedule and material. The calculator models the bore as a right circular cylinder. It converts the entered diameter from inches to feet, divides it by two to obtain the radius, squares the radius, multiplies by pi, and then multiplies by pipe length. This produces cubic feet. The same value is converted using 7.48052 US gallons per cubic foot and 28.3168 liters per cubic foot. These fixed relationships make the result deterministic and suitable for common plumbing, irrigation, HVAC, civil, and industrial estimates. Before calculating, obtain the actual inside diameter from a manufacturer table or measure it when appropriate. Nominal pipe size is a naming convention rather than a direct bore measurement, especially for steel and plastic schedules. Corrosion, lining, scale, and manufacturing tolerances can further reduce real capacity. Flexible hose may also deform, while corrugated products have geometry that is not represented perfectly by a smooth cylinder. The result describes a completely full straight pipe. A partially filled gravity sewer requires a segment calculation based on liquid depth and slope. Fittings, valves, tanks, reducers, branches, and equipment add or subtract capacity and should be assessed separately. For sloped piping that remains full, orientation does not change the geometric volume. For gas calculations, pressure and temperature affect the amount of gas even though the physical internal volume remains constant. Use the output as a transparent planning figure and retain appropriate precision for the job. Two decimal places are usually sufficient for gallons and liters, but dosing work may require verified dimensions and calibrated field volume.
