What is an angle of depression?
It is the angle between an observer's horizontal line and a downward line of sight. It is measured from the horizontal, not from the vertical.
What formula does this calculator use?
The angle is inverse tangent of vertical drop divided by horizontal distance. The direct sight distance is the square root of the sum of the squared drop and squared horizontal distance.
Can I use feet or meters?
Yes, any length unit works because the angle depends on a ratio. Observer height, target height, and horizontal distance must all use the same unit.
Is angle of depression equal to angle of elevation?
For parallel horizontal lines, the depression angle from the observer equals the elevation angle from the target. They are alternate interior angles formed by the same sight line.
Why must horizontal distance be greater than zero?
A zero run would make the drop-to-run ratio undefined for this model. Measure a positive level distance between the observer's vertical projection and the target.
