How to estimate wainscoting
- Measure each uninterrupted wall run in feet.
- Choose the finished wainscoting height and measure the panel’s usable installed width.

How high should wainscoting be?
A traditional starting point is roughly one-third of the wall height, but room proportions and furniture matter. Lay out the cap height visually before cutting materials.
Does the panel count include waste?
No, it is the minimum whole-panel count based on installed width. Add suitable waste for cuts, defects, pattern alignment, and spare material.
Should doors and windows be subtracted?
Large openings can reduce panel area, but they may increase trim and cutting. Treat each interrupted run separately for a more accurate count.
Can this calculate frame-and-panel molding?
It gives useful overall area and run length but not every stile and rail. A detailed elevation with chosen spacing is needed for a frame-and-panel cut list.
