Fence post depth FAQ
Is one third of the post height always deep enough?
No. It is only a starting rule and may be inadequate in loose soil, deep frost, high wind, or for solid tall panels. The calculator adjusts that baseline and applies a separate frost minimum.
Why must a post extend below the frost line?
Freezing soil can lift a shallow footing and leave the fence tilted after thawing. Extending below the local frost depth reduces exposure to that seasonal movement.
Which soil type should I select?
Choose the description closest to the soil surrounding the full footing depth, not only the surface layer. Disturbed fill, saturated soil, or mixed strata should be assessed conservatively by a qualified professional.
Do gate posts need a different foundation?
Often they do because a gate creates eccentric weight and repeated movement. Follow the gate manufacturer’s post and footing requirements, especially for wide or automated gates.
Does concrete eliminate the need for adequate depth?
No. Concrete can increase bearing area and secure the post, but a shallow footing can still rotate or heave. Both embedment depth and footing geometry matter.
