What conductor allowances does the calculator use?
It uses common NEC volume allowances from 2.0 in³ for 14 AWG through 5.0 in³ for 6 AWG. Always verify the table in the code edition adopted for your project.
Do grounding conductors count toward box fill?
Yes, equipment grounding conductors are included under special grouping rules rather than simply counted one by one. This simplified calculator does not replace that detailed code calculation.
How are switches and receptacles counted?
A device yoke or strap commonly adds two conductor-volume allowances based on the largest conductor connected to it. Add devices separately when completing the final code calculation.
Why does stranded wire receive an extra allowance?
The source method applies a practical twenty-percent space factor for stranded wiring. It is a planning adjustment and should not be confused with the mandatory counting rules in the electrical code.
Is the recommended volume guaranteed to be code compliant?
No, it is an early sizing estimate based on the entered conductors and planning factors. A compliant result must include clamps, grounds, devices, fittings, mixed gauges, and all local requirements.
