About marginal cost of extra output
A marginal cost calculator measures how total cost changes when output rises by a stated amount. Economists define marginal cost as the derivative of total cost with respect to quantity. In discrete plant data you approximate that slope with a difference quotient: change in total cost divided by change in quantity. The result is the average incremental cost of the extra units in that step, which is the practical figure for a production run, a shift, or a batch. The marginal cost calculator subtracts initial total cost from final total cost, subtracts initial quantity from final quantity, and divides. Final quantity must exceed initial quantity. Raising output from 100 to 150 units while cost goes from $1,000 to $1,500 yields a $500 cost change, 50 extra units, and $10.00 of marginal cost per unit. A move from 200 to 300 units with cost from $2,000 to $2,600 is $6.00 per extra unit. A 50-to-80 unit step with $500 to $650 cost is $5.00. Use total cost, not average cost, as the inputs. Average cost already divides by quantity; feeding averages into this formula double-counts the division. Include the variable costs that actually move with the extra units—materials, extra labor, energy, wear. Fixed costs that do not change between the two points cancel in the subtraction and do not affect marginal cost. If a step requires a new machine, that lumpy capital sits in the cost change and can spike marginal cost for that increment only. Compare marginal cost with marginal revenue or with the price you can get for the extra units. If price is above marginal cost, the increment adds contribution; if it is below, expansion loses money even when average cost still looks acceptable. Is this the derivative of the total cost curve?
It is the discrete version of that idea: the extra cost of the extra units between two observed points. For a smooth cost function, the derivative at a point can differ from this average slope over a 50-unit step.
Should I enter average cost or total cost?
Enter total cost at each output level. Average cost already divides by quantity; using it here would not match the standard marginal-cost definition.
Do fixed costs affect marginal cost?
Only if they change between the two points. Fixed costs that stay constant cancel in the subtraction. A new machine or setup charge that appears only in the final total cost will raise the measured marginal cost for that increment.
Why must final quantity be larger than initial quantity?
The denominator is the extra output. Zero or negative extra units would make marginal cost undefined or reverse the story into a shutdown. The marginal cost calculator requires a positive quantity change.
How should I use marginal cost in a pricing decision?
