About body shape calculations

A body shape calculator compares the relative proportions of the bust, natural waist, and fullest part of the hips. These measurements describe silhouette rather than attractiveness, fitness, or medical status. The result can help with clothing fit, pattern adjustments, or tracking how proportions change over time. It should never be treated as a judgment about how a body ought to look. Human bodies vary continuously, while familiar labels such as hourglass, triangle, inverted triangle, rectangle, and round are only convenient categories. For a useful comparison, stand naturally and keep the tape level with the floor. Measure the bust around its fullest point, the waist around the narrowest point between the ribs and hips, and the hips around the fullest part of the seat. Use a flexible tape that touches the body without pulling tight. Record all three values in the same unit. Centimeters are shown here, but the shape classification is based on ratios, so inches produce the same category when used consistently. The calculator identifies an hourglass when bust and hips are close and the waist is at least about one quarter smaller than both. A hip measurement more than five percent larger than the bust is classified as triangle, while a bust more than five percent larger than the hips is classified as inverted triangle. When bust and hips are similar, a comparatively full waist is classified as round; otherwise the result is rectangle. Borderline measurements may change category after a small measuring difference, so repeat each measurement and consider the proportions more informative than the label. Waist-to-hip ratio divides waist circumference by hip circumference. Clinicians sometimes use this ratio as one indicator of central fat distribution, but interpretation depends on sex, age, population, pregnancy status, and clinical context. The calculator reports the number without diagnosing risk. Clothing brands and style systems also use different shape thresholds, so another calculator may return a different label from the same measurements. Measure under similar conditions when comparing results. Normal breathing, posture, tape placement, recent meals, and measurement technique can all shift a circumference. Do I have to use centimeters?

Where should I measure my waist?

Measure the natural waist, usually the narrowest point between the bottom rib and the top of the hip bone. Keep the tape horizontal and avoid drawing in your abdomen.

Why is my result close to two categories?

Body shapes lie on a continuum and the category thresholds are approximate. Repeat your measurements and focus on the actual proportions if a small change switches the label.

Does body shape determine health risk?

No, a silhouette category does not diagnose health or disease. Waist-to-hip ratio can be one screening measure, but a clinician interprets it alongside many other factors.

Can my body shape change?
