About the Body Roundness Index

Body Roundness Index, usually shortened to BRI, is an anthropometric measure that describes body geometry using height and waist circumference. It was developed as an alternative to body mass index because BMI uses weight but does not show where body mass is distributed. Waist size adds information about central adiposity, the fat carried around the abdomen that is associated with cardiometabolic risk. The index models the body as an ellipse and expresses how round that shape is on a numerical scale. The calculator uses height and waist circumference measured in the same unit. It applies the published BRI equation: 364.2 minus 365.5 times the square root of 1 minus the squared waist-to-height geometry term. Using centimeters for both entries keeps the ratio dimensionless. A taller person and a shorter person with the same waist will therefore receive different estimates. Values commonly seen in adults fall roughly between 1 and 16, although results outside that range are possible. A higher number generally indicates greater abdominal roundness and potentially more visceral fat. BRI can complement BMI, waist-to-height ratio, blood pressure, laboratory tests, and a clinician's assessment. Research has linked higher BRI values with elevated risk of metabolic syndrome, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and mortality in populations, but an individual result does not establish any disease.
