About face shape classification

Face shape classification is a descriptive way to compare the outline and proportions of the forehead, cheekbones, jaw, width, and length. Familiar labels such as oval, round, square, heart, diamond, and oblong simplify a continuous range of human variation. They are often used when discussing hairstyles, eyewear, makeup, photography, and design. A category is not a measure of health, attractiveness, ethnicity, gender, or personal value, and many faces combine characteristics from more than one label. The calculator uses five core measurements. Face width is measured across the broadest part, usually near the cheekbones, while face height runs from the central hairline to the bottom of the chin. Forehead width spans the widest area above the eyebrows. Jaw width is measured across the jaw angles, and cheekbone width spans the most prominent points. Use the same unit for every dimension, keep the tape or ruler level, and avoid following curves around the face. Classification follows proportion rules rather than a visual recognition model. Cheekbones clearly wider than both forehead and jaw suggest a diamond shape. A forehead notably wider than the jaw suggests a heart shape. Similar broad forehead, cheekbone, and jaw measurements suggest a square shape. A face with nearly equal width and height tends toward round, while moderately greater height with balanced widths tends toward oval. A much longer face is described as oblong. Borderline measurements may reasonably fit two categories. Camera perspective and measurement technique can change the result. Wide-angle phone lenses, a camera held too close, head tilt, hair covering the hairline, facial expression, and inconsistent landmarks can distort proportions. A straight-on photograph taken from farther away with a longer focal length is generally less distorted, but direct physical measurements may still differ. Repeat each measurement and average close readings if precision matters. Gender and age are collected as context but do not alter the geometric classification. Optional eye distance, nose length, and chin length can help someone record a fuller set of proportions, yet they do not determine the outline category in this calculator. Facial proportions also change through growth, aging, body composition, dental treatment, injury, and surgery.
