About the Navy body fat method

The U.S. Navy circumference method estimates body fat percentage from simple tape measurements. It was designed as a practical field alternative to laboratory techniques that require specialized equipment. For males, the equation uses height and the difference between abdominal and neck circumference. For females, it uses height and the combined waist and hip circumference minus neck circumference. These dimensions are transformed with base-ten logarithms to produce an estimated percentage. Using inches, the male equation is 86.010 times log10 of waist minus neck, minus 70.041 times log10 of height, plus 36.76. The female equation is 163.205 times log10 of waist plus hip minus neck, minus 97.684 times log10 of height, minus 78.387. Measurements must all use the same unit and these constants specifically expect inches. The calculator validates that the circumference term inside the logarithm is positive, because zero or a negative number cannot produce a meaningful result. Measurement technique has a large effect on reliability. Stand upright without deliberately pulling in the abdomen. Keep the tape horizontal and snug against the skin without compressing soft tissue. Measure the neck below the larynx with the tape sloping slightly downward toward the front. Measure the abdomen or waist at the site specified by the protocol, commonly around the navel for males and the natural waist for females. Female hip circumference is taken around the widest projection of the buttocks. Repeat each measurement and use a consistent value if readings differ. The result is an estimate, not a direct measurement of fat tissue. Hydration, body shape, muscularity, fat distribution, tape placement, breathing, and measurement skill can all affect it. Individuals with unusual neck or abdominal proportions may see a larger difference from methods such as DXA, air displacement, or hydrostatic weighing. Even those methods have assumptions and error ranges. For tracking change, consistency of technique, time of day, and measurer is often more useful than treating one decimal place as exact. The displayed category uses broad adult reference bands and is descriptive rather than diagnostic. Appropriate body composition ranges depend on age, health, sport, pregnancy status, and professional standards. This calculator does not determine fitness for military service because official programs use specific measurement procedures, rounding rules, age tables, and eligibility standards. Use it for educational estimation and trend tracking. Discuss concerns about weight, nutrition, athletic performance, or health risk with a qualified healthcare or fitness professional.

How to use the Navy body fat calculator

  1. Select the sex-specific equation to reveal the required measurements.
  2. Measure standing height and neck, waist, and if required hip circumference in inches.
  3. Enter each measurement while keeping tape placement and tension consistent.
  4. Select Calculate Body Fat and review the estimate and broad category.
  5. Repeat measurements under similar conditions when tracking change over time.

Navy body fat FAQ

How accurate is the Navy body fat method?

It is a useful field estimate but can differ from direct body composition methods by several percentage points. Consistent measurement technique improves repeatability.

Where should I measure my waist?

Follow the protocol used for your purpose, keeping the tape horizontal and the abdomen relaxed. Official programs may specify a precise anatomical site and rounding method.

Why is hip circumference required only for females?

The published sex-specific female equation includes hip circumference, while the male equation does not. The formulas were derived from different circumference relationships.

Can I enter centimeters?

Not in this version because the displayed equations and constants expect inches. Convert all measurements to inches before entering them.

Does this result determine military eligibility?

No, official assessments use service-specific procedures, tables, and trained measurement. Consult the applicable current regulation for an eligibility decision.
