How to calculate shingles
- Measure the horizontal roof length and width in feet.
- Enter the roof rise for every twelve inches of horizontal run.
- Use the package coverage and choose a waste allowance suitable for the layout.
- Add the current bundle price, then calculate and round the order up to whole bundles.
Frequently asked questions
How many shingle bundles make one roofing square?
Three bundles commonly cover one roofing square, but products differ. Always use the coverage printed on the package or technical data sheet.
Why does roof pitch increase the area?
Plan dimensions describe a horizontal projection rather than the sloped surface. The pitch factor converts that projection into the longer surface that shingles cover.
What waste percentage should I use?
A simple gable roof often starts near ten percent. Hips, valleys, dormers, or intricate cuts can justify a larger allowance.
Does the estimate include ridge cap shingles?
The waste allowance may cover a small ridge requirement, but specialty ridge products can have different coverage. Price and count those products separately when the roofing system requires them.
Can I use footprint dimensions for every roof?
A single rectangle works only for a simple uniform roof. Divide irregular roofs into measurable planes and combine their calculated areas for a better estimate.
