For a rectangular excavation, pad, wall, or base, cubic volume equals length times width times depth. For a circular structure, volume equals pi times half the diameter squared times depth. All dimensions use feet, producing cubic feet before the result is divided by twenty-seven to obtain cubic yards. Weight depends on bulk density. The built-in planning values are 118 lb/ft³ for crushed limestone, 150 for limestone blocks, 102 for chips, 92 for dust, and 128 for aggregate. These are representative points within common ranges, not guaranteed product specifications. Quarry source, gradation, void space, moisture, compaction, and whether the material is loose or solid can materially change density. If a supplier provides a project-specific density, enter it in the optional field to override the selected type. The calculator multiplies cubic feet by density to estimate pounds, then divides by two thousand for short tons. If a price per cubic yard is entered, estimated material cost equals cubic yards times that unit price. For example, a foundation volume measuring 40 feet by 2 feet by 3 feet occupies 240 cubic feet, or about 8.89 cubic yards. At 150 lb/ft³ it weighs 36,000 pounds, or 18 tons. At 65 dollars per cubic yard, the simple material estimate is about 577.78 dollars. An order quantity often needs to exceed the neat geometric volume. Excavated surfaces are uneven, placed stone settles, and compacted base courses may require more loose material than their final dimensions imply. Depending on the product and installation, a compaction allowance of ten to twenty percent and a waste allowance of five to ten percent may be reasonable starting points. Ask the supplier whether quoted coverage and density refer to loose, placed, or compacted material, then apply the appropriate project allowance outside this base calculation. Cost output covers only the entered bulk material rate. Delivery minimums, haul distance, fuel surcharges, taxes, equipment, geotextile, edging, labor, grading, drainage, and disposal can dominate a small project's final budget. Also check truck payload and site access before converting an estimated tonnage into deliveries. Use measured dimensions at several locations when depth or grade varies, split irregular areas into simple shapes, and add their volumes. For structural fills, retaining walls, foundations, and drainage systems, follow the design documents and obtain material and compaction requirements from a qualified professional.
