This calculator multiplies roof length by roof width, then applies a pitch factor derived from the entered rise per twelve inches of horizontal run. It finally adds the waste percentage. The adjusted area is multiplied separately by material and labor rates, making the assumptions visible and easy to compare. Roof width should describe the total horizontal run represented by the roof plane or planes in your simplified model. For a straightforward gable roof, using the full eave-to-eave width with the same pitch factor gives the combined area of both sides when length is measured along the ridge. More complex hips, valleys, dormers, unequal slopes, and additions should be divided into sections. Estimate each section and add the totals to avoid treating complicated geometry as one rectangle. Waste covers panel cuts, end laps where applicable, valleys, hips, penetrations, damage, and a small ordering margin. Are accessories included in the material rate?

Only if your entered rate includes them. Review whether underlayment, flashing, fasteners, trim, ventilation, delivery, and tax are part of the quoted square-foot price.

Does the estimate include removing the old roof?

Not automatically, because the result only uses the entered material and labor rates. Add tear-off, disposal, and deck repairs to those rates or budget them separately.

Can I use one rectangle for a complex roof?

A single rectangle is only a rough approximation for complex geometry. Divide the roof into measurable planes with their own slopes and combine the estimates.
