About stone weight estimates

Stone weight depends on volume and bulk material density. This calculator first turns measured dimensions into an ideal geometric volume, then multiplies that volume by a representative density for the selected stone. Granite is estimated at 2,700 kilograms per cubic meter, limestone at 2,500, sandstone at 2,300, marble at 2,710, and basalt at 3,000. These values provide practical planning estimates for construction, masonry, landscaping, quarry work, transport, and lifting. Three shape models cover common cases. A rectangular block uses length multiplied by width multiplied by height. A cylindrical column uses pi multiplied by radius squared and height. A rounded boulder can be approximated as a sphere using four thirds multiplied by pi and radius cubed. Dimensions are entered in centimeters and converted to meters before volume is calculated. Quantity multiplies the estimate for one stone to provide a combined project mass. Natural stone is not perfectly uniform. Mineral composition, pores, cracks, moisture, weathering, and quarry source all affect density. A published figure is therefore an average, not a guarantee. Dense basalt can exceed the nominal value, porous sandstone can be considerably lighter, and saturated stone can weigh more than dry stone. Supplier test data or a scale reading should replace the estimate whenever a crane lift, vehicle payload, foundation capacity, or other safety decision depends on exact mass. Irregular boulders need careful measurement. A spherical model is best for broadly rounded stones, but many boulders resemble ellipsoids. For a better estimate, measure three perpendicular diameters and treat each half-dimension as an ellipsoid radius. The simple sphere mode can still provide a useful first approximation by using an average diameter. For rough or tapered pieces, consider a conservative bounding shape and then apply a reduction based on visual inspection or measured displacement. The calculator reports kilograms of mass. Handling equipment is often rated by mass, while structural calculations may require force. Confirm the unit required by the crane chart, truck regulation, or engineering document. Include pallets, slings, mortar, packaging, and other attached materials separately. Measure finished dimensions, use a density suited to the actual geological material, and avoid premature rounding. Why are centimeters converted to meters?

The density values are expressed per cubic meter, so volume must use meters for consistent units. The calculator performs that conversion automatically before multiplying by density.
