About cubic yard calculations

A cubic yard calculator measures three-dimensional space for concrete, soil, mulch, gravel, excavation, fill, and other construction materials. One cubic yard contains 27 cubic feet. This tool multiplies length, width, and depth entered in feet, then divides the cubic-foot volume by 27. Optional density and unit-price entries extend that result into estimated pounds and material cost, making one set of measurements useful for quantity planning, hauling checks, and early budgeting. Length, width, and depth must describe the same rectangular section. A depth of six inches should therefore be entered as 0.5 feet, and four inches as about 0.333 feet. For irregular projects, divide the footprint into rectangles, calculate each section, and add the cubic yards. Triangular sections can be estimated as half of an equivalent rectangle. Circular areas require a cylinder formula and should not be treated as full rectangles. Keeping the geometry honest is more important than carrying many decimal places. Weight depends on bulk density rather than volume alone. Dry mulch can weigh only a fraction of what wet soil, aggregate, or concrete weighs in the same space. Use a supplier's pounds-per-cubic-yard figure whenever possible, especially when checking truck payload or disposal limits. Likewise, the cost result simply multiplies calculated volume by the entered price. It does not automatically include waste, delivery, short-load fees, tax, pumping, labor, or compaction. Add the project-appropriate allowance before ordering or adjust the final volume according to supplier guidance. Measurements from excavation and landscape work naturally vary. Take readings at several locations and use a defensible average depth instead of relying on the deepest or shallowest point. Materials delivered loose may settle or compact after placement, while concrete volume can be affected by subgrade variation and form dimensions. Suppliers commonly sell in fixed increments, so round upward to an available order size only after calculating the base quantity. This calculator provides a transparent mathematical estimate, but drawings, engineering requirements, field conditions, and supplier policies should control the final purchase.
