How to calculate baluster spacing
- Measure the usable clear railing length between posts in inches.
- Count the balusters planned for that section and measure their actual width.

Why are there more spaces than balusters?
This layout includes an opening at both ends as well as openings between balusters. A row of ten balusters therefore creates eleven equal openings.
What railing length should I measure?
Use the clear usable distance between inside post faces or other layout boundaries. Remove the width of any hardware or trim that occupies that distance.
Does this calculator guarantee code compliance?
No, it reports geometric spacing only. Verify the permitted opening, measurement direction, and exceptions with the code enforced in your jurisdiction.
Can I use nominal baluster width?
Actual finished width gives a more accurate layout because nominal and finished lumber sizes can differ. Measure several pieces if material dimensions vary.
How do I reduce the clear opening?
Increase the baluster count while keeping the same railing length and baluster width. Recalculate until the unrounded opening is safely within the required limit.
