About the baluster spacing calculator

Even baluster spacing makes a railing look intentional and helps each opening meet the applicable safety limit. This calculator distributes a selected number of equal-width balusters across a clear rail section with one opening at each end. It subtracts the combined width of all balusters from the available railing length, then divides the remaining space by one more than the number of balusters. That extra space represents the two end openings together with every opening between adjacent balusters. For a 60-inch opening with ten balusters that are each 1.5 inches wide, the balusters occupy 15 inches. The remaining 45 inches are divided among eleven openings, producing equal clear gaps of about 4.091 inches. The center-to-center layout is the clear opening plus one baluster width, or about 5.591 inches. Marking centers rather than edges is often faster when the balusters have consistent actual dimensions. The entered railing length should be the usable clear distance between posts or other boundaries, not the overall outside dimension of the assembly. Measure the actual baluster stock because nominal lumber dimensions can differ from finished dimensions. If brackets, trim, post caps, or mounting blocks intrude into the opening, subtract those obstructions before calculating. On stairs, spacing is often regulated based on the shortest opening measured perpendicular to the balusters or tread nosings, so a horizontal rail calculation may not transfer directly to a sloped run.
