About rolling pipe offsets
A rolling offset moves a pipe in two perpendicular directions at the same time. Unlike a simple offset confined to one plane, it may rise or drop while also shifting sideways. The first calculation combines horizontal and vertical displacement with the Pythagorean theorem. Their square root sum gives the true offset, which is the diagonal distance between the original and target pipe centerlines when viewed along the run.
The fitting angle determines how much diagonal pipe travel is required to produce that true offset. Travel equals true offset divided by the sine of the fitting angle. A 45-degree pair uses a multiplier of about 1.414, while a 30-degree pair uses a multiplier of 2. Smaller angles need more run length but create a gentler change in direction. The tool accepts any angle between zero and 90 degrees, though fabrication normally uses standard elbows or bends.
Roll rotation describes the orientation of the offset plane. It is calculated with the two-argument arctangent of vertical offset over horizontal offset. This preserves the correct relationship at zero horizontal offset and reports an angle from the horizontal component toward the vertical component. The result helps orient fittings, but field conventions differ. Confirm the project's reference direction, clocking convention, and whether the drawing shows rise, drop, left, or right before marking pipe.
All entered and reported lengths use the same unit. If offsets are measured in inches, true offset and travel are inches; if measured in millimeters, outputs are millimeters. Center-to-center geometry is essential. Measuring to pipe surfaces without correcting for outside diameter produces an incorrect layout. Likewise, actual cut length is not always equal to theoretical travel because elbows, takeouts, socket depths, weld gaps, and fitting center dimensions occupy part of the assembly.
Use the calculated travel as the geometric centerline distance between bend points. For a fabricated spool, subtract the applicable fitting takeouts according to manufacturer dimensions and shop practice. Check available space along the original run, interference clearance, insulation thickness, support locations, drainage slope, weld access, and thermal movement. Large-bore, high-pressure, process, gas, or code-regulated piping requires approved drawings and qualified fabrication procedures. This calculator makes compound-offset geometry quick and auditable, but accurate installation still depends on verified centerlines, fittings, tolerances, and an appropriate dimensional inspection.
