How to calculate chicken coop size
- Count all chickens that will regularly share the coop and run.
- Enter an indoor allowance based on breed size, climate, and confinement time.
- Enter an outdoor run allowance that reflects how often birds can free-range.
- Calculate the areas, round upward, and fit roosts, nests, feeders, and access within the plan.
Chicken coop sizing FAQ
How many square feet does each chicken need in a coop?
Four square feet per standard hen is a common indoor guideline. Large breeds or birds confined indoors for long periods usually benefit from five or more square feet.
Does the outdoor run count as coop space?
No, the run and enclosed coop perform different jobs and should be planned separately. The indoor allowance must remain adequate when weather or predators keep birds inside.
Can a chicken coop be too large?
Extra floor area is generally helpful if the coop remains dry, secure, and easy to maintain. In very cold climates, good roost placement and draft-free ventilation matter more than trying to make the building tiny.
Should nest boxes be included in floor area?
Only unobstructed, usable floor should count toward the indoor estimate. Elevated nest boxes do not reduce floor area, but boxes sitting on the floor do.
How should I plan for a growing flock?
Enter the largest flock you reasonably expect rather than today's count. Building extra capacity now is typically less costly and disruptive than expanding an occupied coop later.
