About water hardness

Water hardness describes the concentration of dissolved multivalent minerals, primarily calcium and magnesium ions. Water acquires these minerals as it moves through soil and rock, especially limestone, dolomite, and gypsum. Hard water is not generally a health hazard, and calcium and magnesium can contribute to dietary intake. However, hardness influences soap performance, mineral scale, taste, industrial processes, and the operation of heaters, boilers, membranes, and plumbing fixtures. Laboratories often report individual calcium and magnesium concentrations in milligrams per liter. To combine them into one comparable hardness value, each concentration is converted to an equivalent mass of calcium carbonate. The standard factors are approximately 2.497 for calcium and 4.118 for magnesium, based on ionic molar masses and charge equivalents. Total hardness in milligrams per liter as calcium carbonate equals calcium concentration multiplied by 2.497 plus magnesium concentration multiplied by 4.118. The calculator also converts that result to grains per US gallon using 17.118 milligrams per liter as calcium carbonate per grain per gallon. The displayed classification follows commonly used US Geological Survey ranges: below 60 mg/L is soft, 60 through below 120 is moderately hard, 120 through below 180 is hard, and 180 mg/L or more is very hard. These labels are descriptive rather than universal regulatory limits. A utility, appliance manufacturer, laboratory, or treatment provider may use slightly different categories. Treatment decisions should consider the actual application, alkalinity, pH, temperature, silica, iron, manganese, and other water-quality measurements in addition to total hardness. This ion-based calculation assumes the analytical results represent dissolved calcium and magnesium in the same sample and in the stated units. It does not directly use electrical conductivity or total dissolved solids, which include many ions that do not contribute equally to hardness. A titration reported directly as mg/L calcium carbonate should not be entered as calcium concentration. If a report already gives total hardness, use that reported result.
