How to calculate buffer pH
- Find the pKa of the weak acid at the relevant temperature.
- Determine the equilibrium concentration of the weak acid form.
- Determine the conjugate base concentration in the same units.

What happens when acid and base concentrations are equal?
Their ratio is one and the base-10 logarithm is zero. The Henderson-Hasselbalch equation therefore gives a pH exactly equal to pKa.
Can I enter moles instead of molarity?
Yes, if both buffer components occupy the same final volume, their mole ratio equals their concentration ratio. Use either moles for both entries or concentration units for both entries, without mixing units.
What is the useful pH range of a buffer?
A common guideline is pKa plus or minus one pH unit. Within that interval, the base-to-acid ratio ranges from about one tenth to ten and both forms remain significant.
Does dilution change buffer pH?
Ideal dilution lowers acid and base concentrations by the same factor, leaving their ratio and calculated pH unchanged. It does reduce buffer capacity, and very dilute solutions may show larger nonideal effects.
Why might measured pH differ from this result?
Real solutions use chemical activities rather than ideal concentrations, and pKa varies with temperature and ionic strength. Meter calibration, preparation errors, and additional equilibria can also shift measured pH.
