How to calculate incidence
- Enter only the new cases identified during the observation period.
- Enter the disease-free population at risk and the observation time in years.
- Choose a useful population unit, commonly 1,000 or 100,000.

What is the incidence rate formula?
Divide new cases by population at risk multiplied by years of observation. Multiply that value by the chosen population reporting unit.
How is incidence different from prevalence?
Incidence counts new cases and describes occurrence over time. Prevalence counts all existing cases and describes the burden of disease.
Which population unit should I use?
Choose a unit that produces an easy-to-read result and matches reporting conventions. Common choices are 1,000 for frequent events and 100,000 for rarer events.
Can I compare rates from different populations?
You can compare rates when definitions, time periods, and surveillance methods are compatible. Age standardization or other adjustment may be needed when population structures differ.
Does this result include a confidence interval?
