It multiplies a rectangular area's length and width in feet to obtain square feet, then divides that area by nine to obtain square yards. The conversion works because each yard is three feet long, so a one-square-yard surface contains three rows of three square feet, or nine square feet in total. Area conversions must account for both dimensions. Dividing only one finished area value by three is incorrect; square feet are divided by nine. For example, a room measuring 9 feet by 12 feet has 108 square feet. Dividing 108 by nine gives 12 square yards. The same answer comes from converting the dimensions first: 9 feet is 3 yards and 12 feet is 4 yards, and 3 multiplied by 4 is 12 square yards. Take measurements at the finished boundaries and keep the tape level. Decimal feet can represent partial feet; 0.5 foot equals six inches and 0.25 foot equals three inches. For an L-shaped room or irregular yard, sketch the outline and divide it into simple rectangles. Calculate each rectangle and add the square-yard results. Triangles can be calculated as one-half of base multiplied by perpendicular height. Avoid rounding intermediate values, especially when the project has many separate areas. The converted area is a coverage estimate, not necessarily the quantity to purchase. Carpet may require additional material because of roll width, seams, pattern repeats, and installation direction. Tile, pavers, and turf may require extra units for cuts, breakage, and future repairs. Apply a suitable waste allowance after calculating the measured area, and then round up to complete boxes, rolls, pallets, or other supplier units. This calculator assumes a flat rectangular surface and positive measurements. It does not account for slopes, material depth, openings, or installation practices.
