About safe ladder angles

A leaning ladder forms a right triangle with the wall and ground. Wall height is the vertical leg, base distance is the horizontal leg, and ladder length is the hypotenuse. This calculator uses those relationships to estimate placement. If ground distance is blank, it divides wall height by the entered vertical-to-horizontal safety ratio. It then calculates angle with the arctangent of height divided by distance and calculates required ladder length with the Pythagorean theorem. A common setup guideline for portable extension ladders is the four-to-one rule: move the base one unit away from the supporting surface for every four units of working ladder height. That geometry creates an angle of about 76 degrees above horizontal. For a 16-foot support height, the corresponding base distance is 4 feet and the minimum geometric ladder span is about 16.49 feet. A 20-foot ladder is therefore long enough geometrically, although usable rated length, overlap between extension sections, and required extension above a landing must still be considered. The optional ground-distance input lets you evaluate an observed or constrained placement rather than derive distance from the ratio. A base too close to the wall makes the ladder steeper and can increase the chance of tipping backward or losing secure contact. A base too far away creates a shallow angle, increases horizontal force at the feet, and can cause slipping or excessive ladder loading. Place both feet on a firm, level, slip-resistant surface and ensure the top rests against a sound support.
