About vegetable seed planning

A vegetable seed calculator converts a garden's usable area and crop spacing into an estimated seed quantity. The basic planting grid divides square footage into rows and positions within each row. Because one square foot contains 144 square inches, the calculator multiplies area by 144 and divides by row spacing times in-row plant spacing. The result is the approximate number of final planting spots. It then compensates for seeds that may not germinate and adds the reserve percentage you choose, rounding upward so the estimate never asks for part of a seed. Spacing has a large effect on the answer. Closely sown carrots, radishes, and salad greens can require hundreds of seeds in a modest bed, while squash or tomatoes occupy much more room per plant. Use the mature spacing recommended for the crop and growing method. A packet may give separate values for seed spacing, thinning spacing, and row spacing. For a final plant-count plan, enter the spacing after thinning. For direct sowing where several seeds are intentionally placed at each station, increase the reserve or multiply the result by the seeds used per station. Germination rate accounts for viable seeds that fail to emerge under favorable test conditions. Enter the percentage printed on a recent germination test or packet when available. Older seed, poor storage, cold soil, drought, crusting, pests, and disease can reduce field emergence below the laboratory percentage. The extra reserve provides a separate allowance for those field losses, accidental damage, replacements, and small measurement errors. A ten percent reserve is a useful general starting point, but valuable old seed may warrant a careful germination test instead of simply purchasing or sowing much more. Measure only the area that will actually be planted. Exclude paths, borders, irrigation equipment, and sections assigned to other crops. For beds with different spacing patterns, calculate each section separately and add the seed totals. Wide-row, broadcast, succession, and intercropped plantings do not fit a simple rectangular grid perfectly, so interpret the result as a purchasing estimate. Seed size and packet fill vary by cultivar and supplier; compare the calculated number with the packet's stated seed count or weight. Good planning reduces shortages and waste, but local extension advice and the seed supplier's instructions remain the best guide for crop-specific sowing.
