About grain unit conversion
A grain conversion calculator translates agricultural quantities between mass units and volume units. Mass conversions, such as kilograms to pounds, use fixed physical factors. Volume conversions, such as liters to gallons, are also fixed. Moving between mass and volume is different because the result depends on the bulk density or standard bushel weight of the selected grain.
This calculator first converts the entered quantity to kilograms. For weight units it uses standard factors: one pound equals 0.45359237 kilograms, one ounce is one sixteenth of a pound, one metric ton equals 1,000 kilograms, and one quintal equals 100 kilograms. For volume inputs, it converts the unit to liters and applies the selected grain's representative kilograms per liter. A US bushel is treated as 35.2390704 liters.
Commodity bushel weights provide the grain-specific bridge between weight and volume. The calculator uses 27.216 kilograms per bushel for wheat and soybeans, 25.401 for corn, rye, and sorghum, 20.412 for rice, 21.772 for barley, and 14.515 for oats. These values correspond to familiar standard test weights, but actual grain may be lighter or heavier because of moisture, variety, kernel condition, dockage, and packing.
That distinction matters in trade and storage. Five bushels of corn and five bushels of oats occupy the same nominal volume but do not have the same standard mass. Conversely, 100 kilograms of wheat and 100 kilograms of oats convert to different bushel counts. Selecting the correct grain is therefore essential whenever the conversion crosses between weight and volume. Converting only between two weight units does not depend on grain type.
Cups, pints, quarts, gallons, pecks, liters, hectoliters, and bushels are handled as US customary or metric volumes. Regional definitions can differ, especially for dry measures and historical bushels, so verify the standard required by a contract or jurisdiction.
