Correct coverage supports even establishment and helps avoid both thin patches from under-seeding and competition or disease pressure from excessive seed. The best rate comes from the seed label or supplier because grass species, blend, seed quality, climate, and whether the work is a new lawn or overseeding project all influence the recommendation. The first step is measuring area. A rectangle uses length multiplied by width, while a circle uses pi multiplied by radius squared. For an irregular lawn, divide it into simple shapes and add their areas, or measure the total area separately and select Custom Area. Subtract buildings, beds, paving, ponds, and other surfaces that will not receive seed. The calculator accepts square meters, square feet, acres, and hectares and converts the chosen area to square meters internally. Seed rates can be entered as grams or kilograms per square meter, pounds per square foot, pounds per acre, or kilograms per hectare. Each rate is converted to kilograms per square meter before multiplication. Keep the area and rate selections accurate rather than manually mixing units. A rate of 30 grams per square meter over 50 square meters needs 1.5 kilograms before any allowance is added. The optional buffer increases the base amount for minor spreading losses, uncertain measurements, birds, wind, equipment residue, or small bare sections. Ten percent changes 1.5 kilograms to 1.65 kilograms. A buffer should not be used to disguise an inaccurate area or an unsuitable application rate. Very high extra percentages can create overcrowding, so follow the seed producer's directions and local agronomic guidance. New lawns generally use a heavier rate than overseeding established turf, but the exact relationship varies by grass. Seed germination percentage, purity, soil preparation, temperature, moisture, sowing depth, and irrigation determine how much of the applied seed becomes healthy turf. Buying the calculated quantity does not guarantee establishment if site preparation or aftercare is poor. Use the result to compare package sizes, prepare a budget, and divide seed between lawn sections. Round purchasing quantities up to the next available bag size after checking the net weight. Calibrate the spreader and apply in crossing passes for even distribution. For valuable turf, sports fields, erosion control, or challenging conditions, confirm the rate and species choice with a local extension service, seed specialist, or landscape professional.
