Grass Seed Calculator
Calculate grass seed for rectangular, circular, or custom lawn areas with flexible seeding rates and an optional buffer.
About grass seed calculations
Grass seed examples
Typical lawn shapes, rates, and buffer calculations.
| Project | Seed needed | Calculation |
|---|---|---|
| 10 m by 5 m lawn, 30 g/m2, 10 percent buffer | 1.65 kg | 50 m2 needs 1.5 kg before the buffer. |
| 3 m radius circle, 40 g/m2, 5 percent buffer | 1.1875 kg | The circular area is about 28.2743 m2. |
| 0.25 acre, 5 lb/acre, 15 percent buffer | 0.652 kg | The base amount is 1.25 lb. |
| 50 m by 30 m field, 35 g/m2, 10 percent buffer | 57.75 kg | A sports-field scale rectangle. |
How to use the grass seed calculator
- Select the lawn shape and the unit used for its area or dimensions.
- Enter length and width, radius, or a known custom area as requested.
- Enter the recommended seed rate and select its matching unit.

Grass seed calculator FAQ
How do I measure an irregular lawn?
Split it into rectangles and circles, calculate each section, and add the areas. Alternatively, use a measured total with the Custom Area option.
Where do I find the correct seed rate?
Check the seed bag or ask the supplier for the rate appropriate to new seeding or overseeding. Rates vary substantially by grass species and product.
Should I always add a buffer?
A small allowance can cover measurement and spreading losses, but it is not always necessary. Avoid applying far more than the supplier recommends.
Why is the result shown in kilograms?
All supported rates are normalized to kilograms so package quantities are easy to compare. The calculation still honors the area and rate units you selected.
Does more seed create a thicker lawn?
Not necessarily, because excessive seedlings compete for light, water, and nutrients. Correct rate, soil contact, moisture, and timing are more important than simply adding seed.
