At an ideal condition, ribs should usually be easy to feel beneath a light fat covering, a waist should be visible from above, and the abdomen should tuck upward when viewed from the side. Thick fur can hide these contours, making touch especially important. Veterinary teams may use a five-point or nine-point scoring system and can distinguish excess fat from muscle, pregnancy, fluid retention, or structural differences. Unexpected weight change warrants attention even when the calculated category appears normal. Appetite changes, vomiting, diarrhea, excessive thirst, reduced stamina, breathing difficulty, pain, or a swollen abdomen require veterinary advice. Never impose a severe calorie restriction or rapid weight-gain plan based only on this result. A veterinarian can set a safe target, check for disease, estimate energy needs, and recommend appropriate food portions and activity.
