Dog BMI FAQ
Is dog BMI the same as human BMI?
The arithmetic is the same, but interpretation is much less standardized for dogs. Breed shape and muscle mass create wider variation than in adult human screening.
What is a healthy dog BMI?
This calculator uses 15 through 25 as a broad reference range. A veterinarian's body condition score is more reliable for deciding whether a particular dog is at a healthy weight.
Where do I measure a dog's height?
Measure vertically from the floor to the withers at the top of the shoulder blades. Keep the dog standing squarely and do not measure to the head.
Can a muscular dog have a high result?
Yes, BMI cannot separate muscle from body fat. Athletic, compact, or unusually proportioned breeds may fall outside the reference range while having an appropriate body condition.
Should I change food portions from this result?
Do not make a major diet change from BMI alone. Ask a veterinarian to confirm condition, rule out disease, and set a safe calorie target.
