CDAI Calculator
Calculate the Crohn's Disease Activity Index from eight clinical factors to summarize disease activity.
About the CDAI
CDAI examples
| Clinical pattern | Example score | Activity band |
|---|---|---|
| 7 stools, pain 2, well-being 2, Hct 45, stable weight | 50 | Clinical remission in this male-reference example. |
| 35 stools, pain 14, well-being 14, two complications, Hct 35, weight loss | 414 | Moderate to severe disease with antidiarrheal use and questionable mass. |
| 14 stools, pain 7, well-being 7, one complication, Hct 40, stable weight | 162 | Mildly active disease using the male hematocrit reference. |
How to calculate CDAI
- Total liquid stools, abdominal pain ratings, and general well-being ratings across seven days.
- Enter complications, medication use, abdominal mass category, and hematocrit reference sex.
- Enter current and standard body weight in the same unit.
- Select Calculate CDAI Score and review the score with its activity band.
- Discuss trends and supporting tests with the treating gastroenterology team.
CDAI FAQ
What does a CDAI score below 150 mean?
A score below 150 is conventionally categorized as clinical remission. Symptoms, biomarkers, and endoscopic inflammation may still require separate evaluation.
Are pain and well-being entered as averages?
No, the classic CDAI uses the sum of daily ratings over seven days. Using an average instead would substantially understate the calculated score.
Which complications count in CDAI?
The classic list includes arthritis or arthralgia, iritis or uveitis, erythema nodosum or related skin findings, anal disease, other fistula, and fever. Clinical definitions should follow the protocol being used.
Can CDAI show whether the bowel has healed?
No. CDAI emphasizes symptoms and does not directly measure mucosal inflammation or healing. Endoscopy, imaging, and biomarkers may provide complementary objective information.
Why does sex affect the score?
The original formula uses different hematocrit reference values for males and females. A deficit below the selected reference adds weighted points to the total.
