About the Free Cash Flow to Firm Calculator

Free Cash Flow to Firm measures cash generated by operations after taxes and required reinvestment but before distributions to lenders and shareholders. Because it is calculated before financing flows, FCFF is also called unlevered free cash flow. Corporate-finance teams, investors, and valuation analysts use it to estimate enterprise value, compare operating cash generation across capital structures, and assess whether a business can fund creditors and owners. The formula starts with EBIT multiplied by one minus the effective operating tax rate to produce NOPAT. Depreciation and amortization are added back because they are noncash charges. An increase in operating working capital consumes cash and is subtracted; a negative change releases cash and therefore increases FCFF. Capital expenditures are then deducted. Interest expense is collected for financial context but is not deducted in the EBIT-based FCFF formula because financing costs belong to capital providers and are reflected in the discount rate. Positive FCFF indicates operating cash remains after sustaining or expanding the asset and working-capital base. Negative FCFF may signal weak operations, but it can also arise during intentional investment. Per-share FCFF is a scaling aid rather than a direct equity claim, since firm cash flow belongs to both debt and equity providers. FCFF yield divides the flow by the entered market capitalization for a quick comparison, though enterprise value is generally the conceptually consistent denominator. Use values from the same reporting period, currency, and accounting scope. Enter the working-capital change with its sign: a positive increase is a use of cash and a negative change is a source. Use capital spending rather than depreciation as the cash investment amount. When forecasting, link EBIT, tax, working capital, and capital expenditures to defensible business drivers instead of applying arbitrary growth percentages. A professional discounted-cash-flow model projects FCFF and discounts it at the weighted average cost of capital to estimate enterprise value. The FCFF calculator does not model terminal value, debt, cash, lease adjustments, acquisitions, stock compensation, tax-loss carryforwards, or one-time restructuring. Effective cash taxes may differ from the statutory rate. Reconcile historical inputs with the cash-flow statement, normalize unusual items, and use enterprise-value and WACC assumptions that match the same claimholders before relying on FCFF for an investment decision.

How to Calculate FCFF

  1. Enter EBIT and the effective operating tax rate for one period.
  2. Add depreciation and amortization, signed working-capital change, and capital expenditures.
  3. Enter interest expense for context; the EBIT-based formula does not deduct it.
  4. Optionally add shares and market capitalization, then choose a display currency.
  5. Select Calculate FCFF and reconcile the cash-flow bridge with company filings.

FCFF Calculator FAQ

Why does the formula not subtract interest expense?
FCFF is measured before financing payments. Starting with EBIT preserves cash available to both lenders and shareholders, while financing risk enters through WACC.
What is NOPAT?
Net Operating Profit After Tax is EBIT after applying an operating tax rate, before interest and other financing effects. It is the after-tax operating profit that then gets adjusted for noncash charges and reinvestment.
How should a working-capital decrease be entered?
Enter it as a negative amount. Subtracting that negative change correctly adds the released cash to FCFF.
How is FCFF different from FCFE?
FCFF belongs to debt and equity providers before financing flows. FCFE belongs only to equity holders after net borrowing and debt repayment.
Which discount rate applies to forecast FCFF?
Forecast FCFF is generally discounted at a weighted average cost of capital consistent with operating risk, leverage, currency, and claimholders. Using cost of equity instead would mix an unlevered cash-flow claim with an equity-only discount rate.
