About the Price to Cash Flow Ratio Calculator

The price-to-cash-flow ratio compares a share price with operating cash flow per share. Unlike earnings, operating cash flow starts from cash generated by the business and is less sensitive to some non-cash accounting items, though working-capital swings can still distort a single year. A P/CF of 2 with $10 of cash flow per share means a $20 price. Cash-flow yield is the reciprocal of P/CF, shown as a percentage. Formula: cash flow per share = operating cash flow ÷ shares; P/CF = market price ÷ cash flow per share; cash-flow yield % = cash flow per share ÷ price × 100. Equivalently, P/CF = market capitalization ÷ total operating cash flow. All inputs must be positive, so a period with negative operating cash flow is out of scope. Use trailing twelve-month or forward cash flow consistently with the price date. Operating cash flow is not free cash flow. Capital expenditure, acquisitions, and debt service sit below operating cash flow on a typical statement. A low P/CF can look attractive until maintenance capex is deducted. Share count should match the per-share convention of your source, usually diluted weighted-average shares for a flow measure. One-off working-capital releases can inflate cash flow and understate P/CF for a single year. Use the price to cash flow ratio calculator to screen cash-generative businesses, to convert a cash-flow yield into a multiple, or to cross-check a published P/CF. Compare companies with similar capital intensity; a retailer and a software vendor will not share a natural multiple. The output is a screening aid, not a cash forecast or a recommendation to buy or sell shares. Seasonal businesses can show a rich or cheap P/CF depending on the quarter chosen for operating cash flow, so trailing twelve-month cash flow is usually more stable than a single quarter annualized. Read the cash-flow statement footnotes before treating a low multiple as undervaluation.

Price-to-cash-flow ratio FAQ

Is operating cash flow the same as free cash flow?

No. Operating cash flow is before capital expenditure. Free cash flow subtracts capex and sometimes other investments, so P/FCF is usually higher than P/CF.

How is cash-flow yield related to P/CF?

Cash-flow yield is cash flow per share divided by price, shown as a percent. It is 100 divided by P/CF when P/CF is the price divided by cash flow per share.

Which share count should I use?

Use the count that matches your cash-flow source, typically diluted weighted-average shares for a period flow. Period-end shares can differ after buybacks or issuance.

What if operating cash flow is negative?

The calculator requires a positive total. Negative cash flow makes a conventional P/CF unhelpful; analyze the cash-flow statement instead of forcing a multiple.

Is this investment advice?

No. P/CF is a screening ratio. Combine it with capex needs, leverage, and professional advice before acting.
