About Direct Material Price Variance

Direct material price variance isolates the purchasing effect on material cost: whether the actual unit price differed from the standard price, multiplied by the actual quantity purchased or used. Cost accountants, plant controllers, and purchasing managers use it in a standard-costing system to separate price issues from quantity or efficiency issues. The formula is (actual price − standard price) × actual quantity. A positive result is adverse because it increases cost; a negative result is favorable. If actual price is $12.50, standard price is $10.00, and quantity is 1,000, the variance is $2,500 adverse. If actual price falls to $8.00 on 500 units against a $10.00 standard, the variance is $1,000 favorable. The calculator also shows actual and standard material cost so you can reconcile the variance to the two extended totals. Use the variance after a receiving report or production close to explain a COGS surprise, to score a purchasing contract, or to see whether a commodity spike flowed through to product cost. Keep the quantity basis consistent: many textbooks apply price variance to quantity purchased, while some plants apply it to quantity used. Mixing the two bases will not match the general ledger. Price variance does not measure waste, yield, or mix. Those belong to quantity or usage variance. Freight-in, discounts, and quality-related substitutions can look like price variance if they hit the actual unit cost. Standards that are out of date will manufacture variances even when purchasing did nothing unusual. Recalibrate standards when contracts change, and investigate large adverse variances before treating them as a purchasing failure. A clean close process posts price variance when materials are received and quantity variance when they are issued to production. If your plant posts both at usage, still keep the actual quantity in this form consistent with that policy. Commodity hedges, volume rebates, and freight-in can all sit inside actual price; split them out if you need a pure vendor-price story. Zero variance means actual price matched standard, which is a control check as useful as a large adverse result.

What is direct material price variance?

What is an adverse price variance?
When actual price exceeds standard price, the variance is adverse because it increases material cost. The calculator labels any positive (actual minus standard) result as adverse.
What is a favorable price variance?
When actual price is below standard price, the variance is favorable because it reduces material cost. A negative dollar variance in this form is therefore labeled favorable.
Does this measure quantity efficiency?
No. Quantity variance is a separate calculation that compares actual quantity used with standard quantity allowed. Price variance only multiplies the unit-price difference by actual quantity.
