Pounds and Ounces Calculator

Pounds and ounces are customary units of mass used in the United States and in selected contexts elsewhere. One avoirdupois pound contains exactly 16 avoirdupois ounces. A weight can therefore be written as decimal pounds, as separate whole pounds and ounces, or as total ounces. These formats represent the same quantity but serve different practical needs in shipping, cooking, product labeling, and personal weight records. To split decimal pounds into pounds and ounces, keep the whole-number portion as pounds and multiply the fractional portion by 16. For 3.5 pounds, the whole portion is 3 and the fraction is 0.5. Multiplying 0.5 by 16 gives 8 ounces, so the mixed result is 3 pounds 8 ounces. Multiplying the original 3.5 pounds by 16 also gives 56 total ounces. The calculator reports both forms for an easy cross-check. To combine mixed units, multiply the whole pounds by 16, add the extra ounces, and divide the total by 16 when decimal pounds are needed. Five pounds and four ounces contains 80 plus 4, or 84 total ounces. Dividing 84 by 16 gives 5.25 decimal pounds. Ounce values greater than 16 are mathematically accepted because they normalize naturally; for example, 2 pounds 20 ounces equals 3 pounds 4 ounces or 3.25 decimal pounds. These calculations use avoirdupois weight, the everyday system for groceries, parcels, and body weight. A troy ounce, used for precious metals, has a different mass and belongs to a system with 12 troy ounces per troy pound. Fluid ounces measure volume rather than mass and cannot be converted to pounds without knowing a substance's density. Confirm that a source means ordinary avoirdupois ounces before applying the 16-to-one relationship. Precision matters when the fractional pound creates a repeating or highly precise ounce result. A digital scale may display hundredths of a pound, but that does not necessarily mean the measurement is accurate to a hundredth. Keep sufficient digits during calculation and round to the scale's actual resolution. In cooking, a fraction of an ounce may be meaningful for some ingredients; in shipping, carriers may round package weights according to their own billing rules. This calculator changes the notation, not the underlying mass. It does not convert pounds to metric grams or kilograms, and it does not account for tare weight from packaging or containers. Subtract tare before converting if the goal is net product weight.
