About air changes per hour

Air changes per hour, commonly abbreviated ACH, expresses how many times an airflow system supplies or removes a volume of air equal to the room volume during one hour. It provides a convenient way to compare ventilation across spaces of different sizes. This calculator first multiplies room length, width, and height to obtain volume in cubic feet. It then multiplies airflow in cubic feet per minute by 60 and divides by that room volume. The result is an hourly air-change rate. ACH is useful in preliminary HVAC design, indoor air quality reviews, workshops, laboratories, classrooms, bathrooms, kitchens, and storage spaces. A larger airflow produces more air changes when room volume stays constant. A larger room produces fewer air changes when fan airflow stays constant. This makes the metric intuitive for checking whether a fan or air-handling system is broadly appropriate for a particular enclosed space. An ACH target is not universal. Recommended rates vary by occupancy, contaminant source, building code, health guidance, and process risk. A residence may use a modest background ventilation rate, while a busy kitchen, paint area, medical room, or chemical workspace may require much more ventilation and specialized exhaust. Recirculated air also does not necessarily provide the same dilution as outdoor air. If a standard specifies outdoor-air delivery, filtration, pressure relationships, or local exhaust, ACH alone cannot demonstrate compliance. The simple calculation assumes airflow mixes evenly throughout the entire rectangular volume. Real rooms can have short-circuit paths between supply and return grilles, stagnant corners, tall ceiling zones, partitions, open doors, leakage, and variable fan performance. Published fan ratings may also differ from delivered airflow after duct pressure losses. Field measurements at diffusers or ducts give a better basis than nameplate airflow when accuracy matters. Enter clear inside dimensions in feet and actual airflow in CFM. For irregular rooms, divide the space into simple volumes and add them before finding an equivalent dimension, or calculate ACH separately for distinct zones. Treat the result as a transparent planning estimate. Ventilation for hazardous materials, infection control, combustion appliances, or code-regulated occupancy should be designed and verified by a qualified professional using the applicable standard.

Frequently asked questions

What does 6 ACH mean?

It means the hourly airflow is six times the room's calculated volume. It does not mean every air molecule is replaced exactly six times because real mixing is imperfect.

What formula does the calculator use?

ACH equals CFM multiplied by 60, divided by room volume in cubic feet. Room volume equals length multiplied by width multiplied by height.

Can I use exhaust fan airflow?

Yes, when the exhaust airflow represents the air removed from the measured room. Make-up air and pressure balance still need separate consideration.

Does a higher ACH always mean better air quality?

Not necessarily, because source control, outdoor-air quality, filtration, and distribution also matter. Excess airflow can also increase noise and energy use.

Can ACH prove building-code compliance?
