How to Plan Plant Spacing
- Choose a rectangular grid for aligned rows or a triangular grid for denser staggered planting.
- Measure the inside length and width of the usable planting area in meters.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between row spacing and plant spacing?
Row spacing is the perpendicular distance from one row centerline to the next. Plant spacing is the center-to-center distance between plants along a row.
Why does triangular spacing fit more plants?
Staggered rows use the gaps between plants more efficiently than aligned rectangular cells. The idealized geometry increases capacity by about 15.5 percent at equal nominal spacing.
Does the total allow for paths or borders?
No, it assumes the entered rectangle is fully plantable. Measure only usable growing space or subtract paths and operational areas before calculating.
Where can I find the right spacing for a crop?
Use cultivar labels, seed suppliers, extension publications, or a local horticulture adviser. Recommendations depend on mature size, climate, soil, irrigation, and production goals.
Why are rows and positions rounded down?
Only complete planting positions fit inside the entered dimensions. Setbacks at the edges may require reducing the practical count even further.
