About remote vs on-location worker cost
Remote vs on-location examples
Remote plus on-site headcount must equal the total; productivity rescales that headcount before unit cost.
| Inputs | Result | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| 100 staff: 60 remote at $70,000 and 90%; 40 on-site at $95,000 and 100% | Total $8,000,000.00; 94.00 productive; $85,106.38 each; remote share 52.50% | Lower remote cost outweighs a modest productivity haircut. |
| 100 staff: 80 remote at $65,000 and 105%; 20 on-site at $110,000 and 100% | Total $7,400,000.00; 104.00 productive; $71,153.85 each | A remote-heavy mix with a productivity premium cuts unit cost. |
| 100 staff: 25 remote at $80,000 and 85%; 75 on-site at $90,000 and 100% | Total $8,750,000.00; 96.25 productive; $90,909.09 each | Mostly on-site staffing with weaker remote output raises unit cost. |
How to compare remote and on-location cost
- Enter total employees and split them into remote and on-site counts that add up to the total.
- Enter fully loaded cost per person for each group in the same currency and period.
- Enter productivity as a percentage, using 100 for the baseline site.
- Select Calculate, then change one cost or productivity assumption to test a policy shift.
Remote vs on-location cost FAQ
Why must the headcount figures add up?
Remote plus on-site must equal total employees so the cost mix is not double-counted. If the split is wrong, the calculator returns an error instead of a blended result.
What should productivity mean?
Use a relative output index. 100% is the on-site baseline; 90% means each remote employee produces 0.9 of that baseline. It is not hours logged.
Are costs salary only?
Use fully loaded cost: pay, benefits, equipment, software, and workplace overhead. Leaving office rent out of on-site cost understates that group.
What is remote cost share?
It is remote headcount times remote cost, divided by total staffing cost. It can differ from the remote share of headcount when unit costs differ.
