About Quarter-Mile Estimates

A quarter-mile calculator translates a vehicle's power-to-weight ratio into an estimated elapsed time and finish-line speed. This tool uses widely known empirical drag-racing equations: elapsed time is 5.825 times the cube root of weight divided by horsepower, while trap speed is 234 times the cube root of horsepower divided by weight. Weight is entered in pounds and power in horsepower. Because both formulas depend on the cube root, large changes in power or weight produce more moderate changes in the predicted result. Race weight should include the vehicle, driver, fuel, and any equipment carried during the pass. Horsepower should represent power available in the tested configuration. Crankshaft ratings are often easier to find, but wheel horsepower reflects drivetrain losses and may align differently with constants developed from track data. Use one consistent basis when comparing setups. The equations provide a useful benchmark rather than a guaranteed time slip, since they assume the car can convert available power into forward acceleration effectively. Elapsed time is strongly affected by traction, launch technique, gearing, shift time, aerodynamic drag, tire choice, track preparation, weather, and power delivery. Two vehicles with identical weight and peak horsepower can record different times because one has a broader power curve or a better launch. Trap speed is often less sensitive to the first sixty feet and can be a helpful indicator of actual power, but it still changes with air density, wind, gearing, and aerodynamic efficiency. High-speed vehicles require increasingly significant power to overcome drag.
