About dimensional shipping weight

Dimensional weight, also called DIM weight or volumetric weight, converts the space occupied by a package into an equivalent shipping weight. Carriers use it because a large lightweight carton can consume more vehicle and aircraft capacity than a small dense parcel with the same scale weight. Billing by the greater of dimensional weight and actual weight balances those two constraints and encourages efficient packaging. For imperial measurements, multiply exterior length, width, and height in inches to obtain cubic inches. Divide that volume by the carrier's DIM divisor to obtain dimensional pounds. A commonly published domestic divisor is 139, although 166 and other values remain in use for particular services, contracts, and destinations. The calculator then compares unrounded dimensional weight with actual scale weight and displays the greater value as the estimated billable weight. Always measure the outermost points of the package after it is sealed. Include bulges, handles, tubes, or irregular projections unless the carrier specifies another method. Many carriers require each dimension to be rounded up to the next whole inch before multiplication, and they may round the final billable weight up to a whole pound. This calculator preserves the values entered and shows decimal pounds, allowing you to see the underlying comparison clearly. The divisor has a large effect on price. A smaller divisor produces a larger dimensional weight because the service assigns fewer cubic inches to each pound. Air and express networks commonly use stricter factors than some ground or negotiated services. International shipments may instead use centimeters and kilograms with a divisor such as 5000; do not mix those metric measurements with an imperial divisor. Use the result to compare carton sizes, estimate fulfillment costs, or decide whether reducing void fill could move a parcel below a rate threshold. It is an estimate rather than a freight quote. Carrier rules may add oversized-package charges, length-plus-girth limits, minimum weights, remote-area fees, or service-specific rounding. Why do carriers use dimensional weight?

Delivery networks have limited cubic capacity as well as weight limits. DIM pricing prevents large, light parcels from being priced as though they occupy very little space.

What DIM divisor should I use?

Use the divisor stated by your carrier for the exact service, route, and account. The value 139 is common for domestic parcel services, but it is not universal.

Should I round package dimensions?

Follow the carrier's published rule, which often requires rounding each dimension up to a whole unit. Enter those rounded dimensions if you want to mimic its billing calculation.

What is billable weight?

Billable weight is generally the greater of actual scale weight and dimensional weight. A carrier may then apply additional whole-pound rounding or minimums.

Can I enter centimeters and kilograms?
