About D&D 5E Hit Points

Hit points measure how much punishment a Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition character can withstand before falling unconscious. A character's class determines the size of the hit die, while the Constitution modifier is added once for every character level. Barbarians use the largest die, d12; fighters, paladins, and rangers use d10; many versatile classes use d8; and sorcerers and wizards use d6. This calculator follows the predictable average-value method commonly used when creating or leveling a character. At first level, a character receives the maximum value of the class hit die plus the Constitution modifier. At every later level, the player may roll the hit die or take the fixed average listed by the rules. The fixed value is one more than half the die: 7 for d12, 6 for d10, 5 for d8, and 4 for d6. This tool uses those fixed values, then adds the Constitution modifier at every level. For example, a fifth-level fighter with Constitution +2 has 12 HP at first level and gains 8 HP at each of four later levels, producing 44 HP. The estimate is best treated as a baseline character-sheet value. Temporary hit points are a separate pool and are not included. Features such as the Tough feat, a hill dwarf's Dwarven Toughness, Draconic Resilience, or class-specific bonuses can increase the final total and should be added after calculation. A Constitution score change can also alter HP retroactively because its modifier applies to every level. Dungeon Masters can use the result to check newly created characters, prepare pregenerated heroes, or compare survivability across classes. Players can use it before choosing between rolling and taking the average at a level-up. Always confirm optional rules and homebrew adjustments with the campaign's DM, since this calculator models the standard fixed-average rule rather than random hit-die rolls.

  3. Enter the Constitution modifier, not the Constitution score.
  4. Select Calculate Hit Points and add any feat or ancestry bonuses separately.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is first-level HP calculated?

First-level HP equals the maximum class hit die plus the Constitution modifier. The die is not rolled at first level under the standard rules.

Does Constitution apply at every level?

Yes, the current Constitution modifier contributes once per character level. A later modifier change therefore adjusts maximum HP for all existing levels.

Does this calculator roll hit dice?

No, it uses the official fixed average for levels after first. This provides a deterministic total that matches the take-average leveling option.

Are temporary hit points included?

No, temporary hit points are tracked separately and do not increase maximum HP. Add and remove them during play according to the effect that granted them.

Does the Tough feat count?

The displayed result does not include feats or ancestry features. Add two HP per level for Tough after using the calculator.
