About freight class and density

Freight class is a standardized way to group less-than-truckload shipments with similar transportation characteristics. Classes traditionally range from 50 for dense, easy-to-handle freight to 500 for very light or costly-to-handle freight. Carriers use the class with shipment weight, origin, destination, and accessorial services when determining an LTL rate. Choosing the right class helps produce a useful quote and reduces the chance of reclassification charges. Density is pounds per cubic foot. To calculate it, first multiply packaged length, width, and height in inches. Divide that cubic-inch volume by 1,728 to convert it to cubic feet, then divide total shipment weight by the volume. A pallet measuring 48 by 40 by 48 inches occupies 53.33 cubic feet. If it weighs 500 pounds, its density is 9.38 pounds per cubic foot and its density-based class is 100. This calculator applies the familiar density-class table used for estimates. Freight at 50 pounds per cubic foot or more maps to class 50. As density declines, class rises through 55, 60, 65, 70, 77.5, 85, 92.5, 100, and higher tiers up to class 500 below one pound per cubic foot. Boundary values are assigned to the denser, lower-numbered class, consistent with the table's minimum-density thresholds. Density is important, but it is not always the final classification. The National Motor Freight Classification also considers stowability, handling, and liability. Fragile, hazardous, unusually shaped, high-value, or difficult-to-stack products can have a commodity-specific item and class that differs from a density-only estimate. Packaging type and released-value provisions can matter as well. Consult the current NMFC publication, your carrier, or a qualified freight professional before tendering a shipment. Measure the largest outside dimensions after packaging. Include the pallet, crate, straps, corner protection, and overhang because the carrier must reserve space for the whole handling unit. Use the gross scale weight rather than product net weight. For multiple identical pallets, classify each handling unit correctly and provide the combined weight. This tool is best used for planning and quote checks, not as a substitute for an applicable NMFC commodity rule or a carrier's bill-of-lading requirements.
