How to calculate freight class
- Measure the packaged shipment's maximum length, width, and height in inches.
- Weigh the complete handling unit in pounds, including its pallet or crate.
- Enter all four measurements and select Calculate Freight Class.

What is LTL freight class?
LTL freight class groups commodities with similar shipping characteristics. The class helps carriers price trailer space, handling effort, and transportation risk.
How is freight density calculated?
Convert the packaged volume from cubic inches to cubic feet, then divide gross pounds by cubic feet. Always measure the shipment at its widest outside points.
Does density always determine the final class?
No, commodity rules can consider stowability, handling, and liability in addition to density. Confirm the applicable NMFC item before shipping.
Should pallet weight be included?
Yes, use the gross weight of everything tendered to the carrier. That includes the pallet, crate, wrapping, and other packaging.
Why can a carrier reclassify my shipment?
A carrier may inspect dimensions, weight, commodity, or packaging and find that the declared class is incorrect. Accurate measurements and documentation reduce adjustment risk.
