About the square calculator
A square is a regular quadrilateral with four equal sides and four right angles. Because every side has the same length, one measurement is enough to determine its most useful properties. This square calculator turns a side length into area, perimeter, and diagonal values at the same time, removing the need to apply three formulas separately. It is useful for geometry homework, construction estimates, flooring plans, frames, gardens, tiles, screens, and any design based on a square.
Area measures the two-dimensional space inside the boundary. For a side length s, area is s multiplied by s. The result is expressed in square units, so a square with a 5-centimeter side has an area of 25 square centimeters. Perimeter measures the total distance around the outside. Since the four sides are equal, the perimeter is four times the side length. That same 5-centimeter square therefore has a perimeter of 20 centimeters.
The diagonal connects opposite corners and divides the square into two congruent right triangles. Each triangle has legs equal to the side length. Applying the Pythagorean theorem gives a diagonal equal to the side multiplied by the square root of 2, approximately 1.41421356 times the side. For a side of 5, the diagonal is about 7.07106781. The calculator keeps additional precision during the calculation and displays a clean result without unnecessary trailing zeros.
Units are intentionally flexible. Enter inches to receive perimeter and diagonal in inches and area in square inches; enter meters to receive meters and square meters. Do not mix units within one calculation. If your source dimensions use different units, convert them before entering the side. The tool accepts decimal values, which makes it suitable for precise measurements such as 2.75 feet or 0.4 meters.
These relationships also help when checking plans. Perimeter estimates border material such as trim or fencing, while area estimates material that covers a surface. Diagonal length is valuable for checking clearance, choosing a screen size, or confirming that a physical frame is square. Equal diagonals alone do not prove every quadrilateral is a square, but comparing corner-to-corner measurements is a practical construction check.
