What is the formula for relative change?
Subtract the initial value from the final value, then divide by the magnitude of the initial value. Multiply that result by 100 to express it as a percentage change.
What does a negative relative change mean?
A negative result means the final value is lower than the initial value under this convention. Its magnitude tells you the size of the decrease relative to the baseline.
Can relative change be calculated from zero?
No finite relative change exists when the initial value is zero because the formula would divide by zero. You can still state the absolute change and describe the new value directly.
Is relative change the same as absolute change?
No, absolute change retains the original unit and gives a raw difference. Relative change is unitless and scales that difference by the starting value.
Why do opposite changes have different percentages?
Each direction uses a different initial value as its denominator. Going from 80 to 100 uses 80, while returning from 100 to 80 uses 100.
