About percentage change

Percentage change measures how much a quantity moved relative to where it started. It is useful because the raw difference alone does not reveal the scale of the movement. A gain of 20 is substantial when the starting value is 80 but small when the starting value is 8,000. Converting the difference to a percentage of the initial value makes growth and decline comparable across prices, populations, measurements, budgets, and time periods. The formula subtracts the initial value from the final value, divides that difference by the absolute initial value, and multiplies by 100. Moving from 80 to 100 creates a difference of 20. Dividing 20 by 80 gives 0.25, so the percentage increase is 25 percent. Moving from 200 to 150 creates a difference of negative 50. Dividing by 200 and multiplying by 100 produces negative 25 percent, which the calculator presents as a 25 percent decrease. Direction is an essential part of percentage change. A positive result means the final value is greater than the initial value, while a negative result means it is lower. If both values are equal, the change is zero percent. This differs from percent error and percentage difference, which usually report only a nonnegative magnitude. Percentage change is appropriate when the first value is genuinely the baseline, such as last year's revenue, an original price, a starting population, or a measurement taken before an intervention. The calculation is not symmetric. An increase from 80 to 100 is 25 percent, but a decrease from 100 back to 80 is 20 percent because the second comparison uses a different starting base. For the same reason, a 20 percent decrease followed by a 20 percent increase does not return to the original value. Starting at 100, the decrease reaches 80, and a 20 percent increase on 80 reaches only 96. A zero initial value cannot be used in the standard formula because it would require division by zero. When something grows from zero, describe the absolute increase or choose another meaningful baseline rather than claiming an infinite percentage. Percentage change can also exceed 100 percent: moving from 40 to 100 is a 150 percent increase. Keep the units consistent, use values from comparable periods or conditions, and round only after completing the calculation so the result remains accurate.
